Nasal Polyps

Sinusitis sometimes causes the membranes of the sinuses to gradually bulge out into the nasal cavity. Nasal polyps can cause nasal blockage, mouth breathing, sinus infections and even decreased sense of smell. Although the exact cause is unknown, many patients with nasal polyps will test positive for allergies.  An office evaluation including an endoscope and CT scan helps determines the extent of the polyps.

Nasal polyps can be effectively treated with medication, allergy treatment as well as sinus surgery. Minimally invasive endoscopic sinus surgery is a very effective treatment option for nasal polyps, curing about 2 out of 3 patients. Although polyps occasionally recur, the chance can be reduced with prescription nasal sprays and allergy treatment.
