Vocal Cord Paralysis

A weak or paralyzed vocal cord usually causes a weak or breathy voice. A thorough history and exam as well as other tests are usually necessary to determine the cause. Sometimes no cause is found.  Motion may return naturally over time, and speech therapy is often recommended to speed the process.  Procedures to improve the voice include laryngoscopy with vocal cord injection as well as vocal cord implants (laryngoplasty).
