Persistent Otitis Media

Otitis media, or a middle ear infection, is common in children. Symptoms of a middle ear infection include:

  • Fever
  • Pain
  • Irritability
  • Hearing Loss
  • Drainage

Persistent Otitis Media

Because children tend to have dysfunction of the Eustachian tube (the tube that equalizes pressure in the ear), they often experience recurrent infections. In most cases, the Eustacian tube function improves by age two. Other factors that contribute to ear infection include allergies and adenoid enlargement.

Ear Tube Surgery

Antibiotics are usually prescribed to clear the infection. Yet when infections become too frequent and persistent, we may recommend that ear tubes be placed into the eardrum. The procedure, which is performed under brief anesthesia, equalizes the pressure in the middle ear, and often eliminates recurrent ear infections.
